OXFORD City booked themselves a place in the Vanarama National League South play-off final after a win on home turf.

Zac McEachran gave City the lead against Worthing with a wonderful strike from the edge of the penalty area just after the midway point of the first half, while Alfie Potter doubled the advantage moments before the half-time break.

The semi-final win set up a final against St Albans City, who won at Dartford on penalties in the other last four game, played earlier in the afternoon.

Potter spurned an early opportunity for the Hoops when he rounded goalkeeper Alieu Secka but his touch took him too far and the ball ran out of play.

McEachran then drew a foul in a central area 20 yards out but Josh Parker fired the free kick well over Secka’s goal.

From the goal kick, Secka looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet and Potter again missed the chance to open the scoring as he slid on the pitch just as he looked to make a connection with the ball from inside the six-yard box.

With 25 minutes on the clock, McEachran gave the Hoops the lead when he collected the ball from Potter, drove forward and fizzed an effort into the bottom corner.

Potter doubled the lead just before half-time from a matter of yards after a brilliant move from City.

It began when Parker took the ball on his chest from goalkeeper Chris Haigh’s long kick, and then played a ball over the top for McEachran.

The move made its way to the left-hand side where a hooked ball to the back post was headed across the face of goal from Aaron Williams-Bushell, with Potter on hand to scramble home from just a few yards.

The visitors started brightly in the second half as Ibby Akanbi drifted into the left channel of the penalty box but fired his effort into the sidenetting.

Ten minutes into the second period, a dangerous run and cross from half-time substitute Jesse Starkey deflected off a City man and out for a corner which failed to threaten.

As the game ticked past the hour mark, another opportunity from a set piece presented itself to the Hoops as Lewis Coyle curled over a left-footed free kick from the right-hand side of the penalty box.

With 20 minutes to go, Worthing threatened from a set piece of their own when Aarran Racine’s back post header was headed into the gloves of Haigh.

Reece Myles-Meekums then fired a 25-yard shot from the edge of the box, which drew a comfortable stop from Haigh.

Worthing then swung a right-wing free kick into the box, however there was no telling touch for the West Sussex outfit.

In five minutes of stoppage time, Akanbi’s strike at the back post was deflected out for a corner, but the Hoops were able to clear their lines and hold on for a memorable win.
