A STRIKE from Aidan Elliott-Wheeler helped Banbury United end a winless run of 11 games.

The Oxford United youngster, on loan with the Puritans until the end of the season, saw his deflected effort seal the three points with 10 minutes to go away at Southport.

Andy Whing’s side went close early on when Tom Costello shot just wide of the post in the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts responded well, with Jordan Archer flicking an effort wide and Charlie Munro first volleying over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty box, before seeing a deflected strike go out for a corner.

Southport took the lead shortly before half-time when Archer headed home from a corner.

Puritans skipper Giorgio Rasulo sent a free kick just over the bar with 20 minutes to go, however his side found an equaliser via a Jay Williams header with 78 minutes on the clock.

Two minutes later, Elliott-Wheeler’s effort nicked off Joe Adams to ensure Banbury left with all three points.

The win lifted the Puritans one place to 17th in Vanarama National League North, leaving them eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Oxford City striker Joe Iaciofano has returned to the Hoops after his loan spell with the Puritans.
