Radley pulled off an impressive second place in their Southern League Division 3 West meeting at Salisbury, despite travelling to Wiltshire with only eight athletes.

With several team members unavailable, Radley finished only 14 points adrift.

And it was team captain Chris Franks who took most of the plaudits, winning three events in style, before adding useful points in the triple jump and 4x100m.

Franks won the hammer (38.05m), discus (32.86m) and shot (10.77m).

Tony Keet was one of the star performers, setting personal bests in two events.

He shaved 1.2 secs off his previous best in the 400m hurdles, before knocking a massive seven seconds off his 400m time (1.00.8).

Keet also competed in the 3,000m steeplechase and both relays.

Ben Owen grabbed his customary sprint double, winning both the 100 and 200m, before adding victory in the B string shot.

Owen was also second in the long jump.

Paul Jegou had a busy afternoon, competing in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000m, picking up two seconds and a third.

Steve Wren took part in six events, before pulling up injured, while Arran Evans also had a hectic day in the 5,000m, 3,000m steeplechase and both relays.

  • Abingdon Amblers claimed second place in their Division 3 West fixture, held at the same venue.

With a number of athletes missing through injury, it was the youngsters who shone.

The star of the show was James Wright, who beat the club's triple jump record with a leap of 13.03m.

This smashed the previous record, which had stood since 2001, by 30cm, putting him in the top 20 in the country for under 17 athletes.

Luke Chown also impressed, clocking 11.3 secs to win the 100m.

Chown and Wright then teamed up to claim a one-two in the long jump by both passing the six metre mark with leaps of 6.30m and 6.07m respectively.

In the closing stages, Abingdon were edged into second place by the host club, Salisbury, finishing just seven points behind.
