OXFORD United majority shareholder Erick Thohir has been elected chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).

Thohir and fellow Indonesian investor Anindya Bakrie took a controlling 51 per cent stake in the U’s back in September.

The 52-year-old won the election to be PSSI chairman, receiving 64 votes compared to his nearest rival who won 22 votes.

Two other candidates did not get a single vote, the PSSI reported.

Thohir has been elected chairman for the 2023-27 period.

He tweeted: “Thank you for the trust of voters and the support of football lovers.

“No wins today. Victory is when the national team excels, fans can safely watch their favourite team, the quality of referees and coaches improves, and Indonesian football can be clean and accomplished.”

The former Inter Milan owner and president was also previously the majority shareholder at DC United in the US.

Thohir’s background is in building stadia, while he is the founder of media company Mahaka Media, which owns TV stations and newspapers in Indonesia.

He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee.
