KARL Robinson was delighted to see his Oxford United side reach the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Goals in each half from Billy Bodin and Tyler Goodrham, either side of a Rohan Ince stunner, ensured United set up a second round clash at home to fellow Sky Bet League One team Exeter City.

Vanarama National League outfit Woking pushed the U’s all the way though, in a match played in a constant torrential downpour.

United head coach Robinson was proud of his players though, for their part in what was a thrilling cup tie.

He said: “I thought we were superb and controlled most aspects of the game against a team with a record as good as anybody’s in the country.

“The weather, who did it suit more? Them. I thought we got control of the game after 15 minutes.

“We moved the ball well, we had a very controlled element to our game.

“I thought the second half got worse for us and then we stepped it up again.

“The substitutions worked, the team selection was right – our staff picking the team.”

Robinson added: “We are over the moon with this result, this is a hard place to come.

“We’re a young squad and we’re showing signs of improvement week in, week out.

“And not just improvement, but signs of togetherness.”

Goalkeeper Ed McGinty was given the chance to impress, with regular number one choice Simon Eastwood dropped to the bench.

McGinty though excelled in conditions especially challenging for a goalkeeper.

He made one save in particular which preserved United’s 2-1 lead, when he stopped a point-blank range header from Jack Roles, with 12 minutes to go.

Robinson said: “It was at him, I’d expect him to save that. Ed’s a very good goalkeeper.

“He came in and was fantastic.

“Jack’s [Stevens] playing and getting better, I spoke to him on Saturday.

“Easty’s playing and playing well for us, and Ed is training like a demon.

“He’s now performing the way we want him to when he’s called upon in these big games.

“From that point of view, what Wayne Brown and the goalkeeping department do is outstanding.”

The cup win extends United’s recent unbeaten run to six matches in all competitions.

Robinson said: “We didn’t have a great start through injuries and things out of our control, and some of those things have slightly turned in this moment in time.

“The one thing that makes these things turn is the players’ and staff work ethic.

“We’ve not cracked it, we’re no way near where we want to be, there’s a lot more improvement still to be done and the longer this season goes on, we will improve.

“We’re not in a bad place, we’re in mid-table, and we’ve got some really big games in the league, to try and push and get in that top six.”
