JORDAN Jenkins won the first piece of silverware for Oxford Speedway since 2005 after claiming the National League Riders’ Championship at Scunthorpe.

The 21-year-old Oxford Chargers skipper dropped just one point from five rides to take victory ahead of Kent’s Max Clegg and Mildenhall’s Jason Edwards, who both scored 13.

Jenkins made a dream start by winning heats three and seven, in front of title rivals Lee Complin and Dan Thompson.

He then dropped a point in heat nine when finishing second behind Edwards.

A third win for Jenkins in heat 14 meant he was required to win the final programmed race of the afternoon to end Oxford’s 17-year wait for silverware.

After a crash in the heat’s original staging, Jenkins made a perfect start from gate three to win an awarded race after Jack Kingston fell at the end of the third lap.

Jenkins’ triumph confirmed Oxford Speedway’s first piece of silverware since the club won the Craven Shield in 2005.

He also became Oxford’s first rider to win a Riders’ Championship since Hans Nielsen won the British League Riders’ Championship in 1990.

He said: “To be the first rider to win a Riders’ Championship for Oxford since Hans Nielsen is a very good feeling, although I’m not sure if I can replicate everything he achieved in the sport.

“But it is definitely nice to win something for Oxford this year in their first season back in speedway.”

Jody Scott was Oxford Chargers’ other representative in the competition. The 15-year-old scored four points from his five rides.
