Yemi Odubade insists he doesn't want to leave Oxford United - and will do his utmost to try to stay at the club.

The transfer-listed striker was on fire in helping the U's thrash Farsley Celtic 5-1 at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday in their biggest win of the season.

And afterwards, he revealed his hope that he can remain with United and play a part in them moving onwards and upwards.

"My future's with Oxford," he insisted.

"I didn't ask to be put on the transfer list, but things happen for a reason.

"I just want to say that I don't want to go anywhere, I want to grow with Oxford.

"Oxford's the best team to play for, it's got great facilities, great fans, great staff and great players. I want to be here.

"I didn't want to be on the transfer list, but if it's given me a kick up the backside, it's worked.

"Obviously I'm working hard, but I haven't had the best of seasons.

"Coming from non-League and doing really well, I don't know whether I was then just short of confidence. But I've put that behind me now and just want to play football for the rest of the year."

Odubade, last season's fans' player of the year, was one of those who bore the brunt of the blame when United kept missing chances earlier in the season.

But boss Darren Patterson had seen how slow Farsley Celtic's back four were, and Odubade tore them to pieces.

He scored inside three minutes, with an exciting run and fine finish, was twice brought down for penalties, and might himself have had a hat-trick.

United had no fewer than 26 shots on goal, one of the highest recorded totals since they moved to the stadium.

"We scored five, but it could have been a lot, lot more," Patterson agreed.

"Playing Yemi was something we'd been looking at for a while, he's been looking more like himself in training, and knowing a bit about Farsley, and how they play, we knew that his pace would cause them problems."

It proved a tactical masterstroke to unleash Odubade, and also to rest Matt Green. He came on with 20 minutes to go, and bagged two goals, which took his tally to eight goals, now just one behind leading scorer Odubade.

Patterson said: "I think, because of the standards he's set, the last couple of games Matt had dropped below them.

"There's also the fact that there's a lot of games coming thick and fast. He's a young man, he's learning his trade and physically we've got to look after him as well.

"He wasn't too happy about being dropped, but he's shown the right reaction, which is what we're after."

It had looked, if another club had come in for him, that Odubade, one of United's biggest earners and who is contracted until the summer of 2009, might be on his way from Oxford.

But Saturday might prove to be a turning point.

Patterson said: "Everyone at this football club wants Yemi running around, getting at defenders like that and scoring goals, it's a wonderful sight.

"He's got fantastic pace and we're pleased to see him on form and smiling. I'm delighted for the lad because he's a real good kid."
