Frilford Heath went back in time to mark the club's 100th birthday with a 'cross-country' tournament.

The club's lease was signed on March 31, 1908 and 100 years to the day later, members played 11 of the original holes.

Frilford spokesman Ian Seward said: "The course comprised parts of the now Red and Green courses, though the golf rules of the time were not adopted as the stymie would take some explaining.

"Several of these holes have long disappeared from general play and competitors had to negotiate numerous hazards.

"These included trees that have grown enormously in size during the past century."

Players started the sell-out event on the Green Course's 14th hole and first prize was a copy of Bernard Darwin's 'The Golf Courses of the British Isles', first published in 1910.

Frilford featured strongly in the book and is described as "a wonderful oasis in a desert of mud time alone is wanted to make Frilford a very fine course indeed."

The winning team were Neil Davies, Clem Davies, Mike Partridge and Tony Wall with 53 points.

  • Oxfordshire ladies' second team got their season off to a flying start with a 6-3 victory over Buckinghamshire at Buckingham.

Oxon finished the morning foursomes 2-1 up after Lauren Jupp (Studley Wood) and Sarah Arnold (Henley) had a resounding 7 & 6 win over Vicky Frost and Georgie Cairns.

Annie Gowing from Frilford Heath and Laura Watkins (Bicester) beat Gillian Kinnear and Harriet Beasley 5 & 4.

Jupp, Sarah Amos (Tadmarton Heath), Kate Evans (Frilford) and Gowing added singles wins with scores of 4 & 3, 2 & 1, 8 & 6 and 6 & 5 respectively.

  • The International Pairs is launching an extra qualifying competition to celebrate its tenth anniversary.

Running alongside the normal tournament, matches will be played over four knockout rounds in regions across the UK between June and September.

Pairs don't have to be from the same club.

Winners will progress to the main semi-finals in Scotland in October with a place in the UK grand final at Carnoustie up for grabs.

The closing date for entries is May 25, with the draw shortly afterwards.
