Manager Darren Patterson says he is taking a long, hard look at himself in the wake of Oxford United's heavy home defeat on Saturday.

Although most fans have blamed the U's players for the capitulation as they crashed 3-0 to play-off-chasing Burton Albion, Patterson wants to analyse his own decisions and team selections.

The U's boss said he was "angry, upset and dumbfounded" by the manner of Saturday's performance, which saw United comprehensively outplayed by a team who are in the middle of a log-jam of fixtures, after gifting them the first two goals.

Patterson reflected: "For 15 minutes we looked so comfortable, it's frightening, the system looked good, we were playing good attacking football. But after that one goal went in they just let their heads drop and were aimlessly running around, with no-one wanting to get on the ball or take control of the situations, and everybody was just running about."

United's manager tried to change it after the break by making three substitutions before the midway point in the second half, but they didn't alter the way Burton bossed the game.

And the fans vented their disgust at the end.

"You bring subs on . . . there were a couple of individuals that had a go, but it was a bad day for it," he said.

"I can't blame the fans for their reaction, it was spot on and I agreed with what they were saying.

"Obviously I've got to take a long, hard look at myself and how I'm doing things, as well as the players, it's as simple as that."

Patterson also admitted he could have no sympathy with James Clarke for the red card he got. He will now be suspended for a game.

"I don't feel that sorry for him because he'd been booked, and for the second one it looked for me like he tugged on his shirt," he added
