At long last, the Thames switched itself on last Sunday, especially for the seven matchmen fishing the Jolly Anglers club match on the BMH stretch.

After weeks of poor returns, the river was on song, with Phil Ansell putting 19 bream and a chub on the scales for a winning 81.13.0. All his fish fell to groundbait feeder and maggot.

Using the same tactics, Anthony Brooker landed ten bream for a second-placed 49.11.0, while in third, again on the feeder and maggot, was Warren Cave with 48.3.8 - another ten bream.

But it didn't end there because Dick Edmunds caught 37.11.0, Dave Mitchell 29.14.0 and Bob Wyatt 16.9.0 - all bream catches.

Frank Butler missed out on the bream, but had two chub, the best going 5.7.0, weighing in 9.5.0.

Benson fished their Tiny Trophy on the Thames at Benson and 11 anglers all enjoyed good sport.

Ian Fisher caught eight bream, the best going 6.4.0, on liquidised bread with flake on the hook, for a winning weight of 38.1.0.

Nine bream, plus a tench of 5.12.0, on the feeder with red maggot gave Mick Marriott 31.4.0 for second, while alternating between maggot and bread, Basil Rossier caught a bream and two chub for a third-placed 9.15.0.

Kidlington fished their McGregor Cup against Clanfield on the Cherwell between Thrupp and the Boat House where 24 anglers took part.

It was Clanfield's Dougie Foreshew who took the honours with 32.3.0, comprising six bream and three perch on the pole-feeder and alternating between maggot and pinkie.

Jason Bean (Kidlington) weighed in 26.7.0 of chub and perch on a lollipop float with worm for second, followed by Monty Finnemore with 23.14.0 - a 6lb chub, plus a net full of perch on maggot- feeder.

Team weights: Kidlington 96.3.8, Clanfield 84.0.8.

Kidlington points after 17 matches: J Bean 123, H Clarke 114, T Lester 110, A Middleton 91.

Tunnel Barn was the venue for the latest Oxford Carp Winter League and it turned out to be hard work for the 15 matchmen.

Fishing out in open water, Chris Dann used pole and maggot for top spot with 30.0.0 of carp.

Dave Hawkins netted two carp of around 8lb, plus some smaller fish on corn, for 27.8.0, followed by Paul Dann with 25.8.0 on pole and maggot.

The final match in the Kinloch P Woodley Carp League was fished by 11 at Ridgeway, which proved patchy as the fish seemed to be in pockets.

Using pole and maggot, Dave Wilsdon had 19.7.0 of carp for first place, followed by Dave Williams with 16.14.0 on the long pole and maggot.

Graham Wilsdon finished third with 15.12.0.

Final league points: D Wilsdon 49, D Williams 43, B Bryant 42, D Bowerman 38.

Oxford Bus AC were on their school waters' down the High, and with the Cherwell looking good, expectations were high.

Sat opposite the Botanical Gardens, Anthony Tompkins used liquidised bread and flake for a nice bag of roach weighing 10.8.0.

George Kingston fed maggot and landed roach and perch for a second-placed 3.15.0, while Terry Yates was third with 3.14.0 of perch on pole with chopped worm.

On a low and clear Thame, Cuddesdon Mill VAA fished their Fred Cooper Last Chance Cup, with Geoff Ring topping the 13-strong field to take the silverware.

A chub of 5.11.0, plus a 2.13.0 perch, on stick float and maggot helped him to first place with 8.10.0.

Legering bread, Mick Harding netted three chub for second with 8.4.0, and third with a chub of 3.14.0 on pole and maggot was Brian Horseman.
