John Brodley was more than happy with the Leadbitter Oxford Academy's debut performance - a 24-13 victory over Banbury Colts.

Captain Nick Gardner led the way with a brace of tries, with Paul Hipwell converting one, as Oxford led 12-6 at the break.

Hipwell converted the next score from Joe Jacobs, while Alex Geddis ran in try No 4.

Academy coach Brodley said: "I am delighted with the performance, which had a good skill level coupled with the willingness to run the ball and create opportunities.

"The defence in the first half was pleasing and to turn round ahead was a bonus.

"But as the players grew in confidence, they began to dominate in the set pieces and believe in their own ability.

"I would like to thank Banbury for their support and provide a stern test at such short notice.

"Their side was a little younger, but showed touch of real class and determination."
