JOE Iaciofano hopes stability is the key to success after signing a new deal with Oxford City.

The striker has agreed fresh terms after scoring 23 goals in his first campaign with the Vanarama National League South club.

Iaciofano has not stayed somewhere for more than one season since leaving boyhood side Northampton Town in 2019.

The 23-year-old is not a player who likes standing still, but believes remaining City are a club moving in the right direction under head coach Ross Jenkins.

Iaciofano said: “I wouldn’t re-sign for the club if the ambition wasn’t to go forward, it’s not in my nature to be stagnant as a player.

“I wanted some solidarity of being at the same club, I trust the players around me and the manager and as a club hopefully we can move forward.

“He’s got the right aspirations as a young, hungry manager and I’m a young, hungry player.

“Hopefully he can improve me – I’d like to think I’ve done well since he got the job and he’s rewarded me with a new contract.”

Iaciofano arrived with a prolific reputation when he joined from Havant & Waterlooville last summer, having finished top-scorer in National League South in 2019/20.

He opened his City account against his former club in September and bagged another nine goals before the end of the calendar year.

The ex-Northampton trainee continued to find the net and ended the season as the fifth-highest scorer in National League South, helping Jenkins’ side reach the play-offs.

“It’s always satisfying to score goals because that’s my main job. It’s what I’m on the pitch to do,” he said.

“I know with this team and the boys behind me then I’m going to get chances.

“I think I’m at the perfect place as they can feed me and hopefully I put a few away and it propels us up the league again.

“I always back myself to improve on the season before – confidence is high, I’m in with the group and hopefully I carry on from last year.”

City have already lost Elliot Benyon, Zico Asare and Ewan Clark this summer, but defender Charlie Rowan and midfielders Reece Fleet, Josh Ashby and Zac McEachran have all re-signed.

All three players attracted interest from elsewhere and Iaciofano kept in touch with their decisions.

He said: “I’ve been speaking to them all summer, we’ve been at each other about our plans.

“We’re a good group, we all speak to each other outside of football.

“I was always keen to see what they were doing – they’re all massive factors for me re-signing.”
