ALEX Gorrin has signed a new contract with Oxford United.

The Spanish midfielder has agreed a one-year deal that will take him into his fourth season with the U’s.

Gorrin has not played since sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in an Emirates FA Cup draw with Bristol Rovers last November.

The 28-year-old returned to the training pitches in March and has continued his recovery since the season ended, with a view to making his comeback next term.

He said: “That was so frustrating - watching the team and seeing us go so close to promotion again, but knowing I couldn’t play a part.

“I have been working hard all summer and will hopefully get a good pre-season and be able to play a full part in what we hope will be a successful season.

“I love being at Oxford - the players and staff are a very tight group and the fans have been amazing with me. I can’t wait to report back and get going again.”

Gorrin’s new deal comes less than 24 hours after United announced captain Elliott Moore had signed a three-year contract.

The defensive midfielder has made 101 U’s appearances, including 88 starts, since arriving from Motherwell in summer 2019.

He featured regularly in his first two seasons as United twice reached the Sky Bet League One play-offs, but played just 17 games last term before his injury.

Gorrin's previous contract expired this summer, but Karl Robinson revealed back in December that the former Sunderland trainee would be offered a new deal as he worked his way back to fitness.

The U’s head coach said: “Alex is a massive part of this group, on and off the pitch. He is a terrific character, a winner, and a very good player.

“We will be sensible with him during pre-season but all the scans and reports are really encouraging.

“He is a great pro who we know will follow the advice to allow him to get back out there as quickly as possible and be part of what we are building for the new season.”

OPINION: New Elliott Moore contract shows big club mentality

Gorrin’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with some reports suggesting he was set to leave United and that several clubs were monitoring the situation.

His new deal means Billy Bodin is the only out of contract U’s player whose future is still to be confirmed.
