TRIBUTES have been paid to former Oxford United player Craig Farrell following his death, aged 39.

The striker joined on loan from York City in January 2009 and scored two goals in 15 appearances in the Blue Square Premier.

Farrell was one of Chris Wilder’s first signings, arriving at the Kassam Stadium just over a month after the United boss.

He made his debut in a 2-1 win over Lewes on February 2 and played all but one of the U's remaining games as they narrowly missed out on a play-off spot.

Farrell opened his United account on his second appearance, a 3-0 victory over Barrow at the Kassam Stadium on Valentine’s Day.

The striker was on target again 17 days later as United beat Eastbourne Borough by the same score line.

Farrell came through the youth systems at Middlesbrough and Leeds United, where he played alongside former U’s left back Tom Newey.

The defender paid tribute to his former teammate, writing: “Such sad news! Faz was such a great lad and a top player who I was fortunate enough to create many memories with growing up at Leeds on and off the pitch.

“Thoughts are with his family at this devastating time. Rest easy Faz!”

Farrell left Leeds for Carlisle United, initially on loan, and scored 24 goals in 95 appearances during a three-year spell.

Blues boss Paul Simpson, another former United player, managed the striker at Brunton Park.

He said: “This is incredibly sad news. He was a really decent bloke and was a good lad to have in the group.”

Farrell went on to play for several teams including Exeter City, York and Rushden & Diamonds, with his final stop at Whitby Town where he retired in February 2015.
