A NEW sports bar at Oxford Stadium is set to be named after Joey Beauchamp.

The Oxford United legend, who died in February, owned greyhounds and was a regular at Sandy Lane before its closure in 2012.

The Cowley venue reopened last month with the first competitive speedway fixture in the city for 15 years, while greyhound racing is set to start again this summer.

The sports bar is expected to open early next month and managing director Kevin Boothby feels it is fitting to name it after one of Oxford’s favourite sons.

He told BBC Oxford: “We’re going to make one of the sports bars ‘The Joey Beauchamp bar’. That’ll be open seven days a week.

“We’re going to get Joey’s family to come up and open it. Joey was a big greyhounds fan as well, so it’s absolutely perfect.”

United were rocked by the death of arguably their greatest player earlier this year, aged just 50.

The legendary winger scored 77 goals in 428 games across two spells between 1989 and 2002.

Only five players in United’s history have found the net more times for the club, while he is tenth in the appearances chart.

The U’s paid an emotional tribute at their Sky Bet League One game against Cambridge United on February 26, before Beauchamp’s funeral was held in Kidlington in late March.
