CAMERON Brannagan bagged a hat-trick of prizes at Oxford United’s end of season awards.

The midfielder was named supporters’ player of the year and players’ player of the year, while his long-range strike against Portsmouth in February won Joey Beauchamp Goal of the Season.

Brannagan has had an excellent campaign for United, scoring 14 goals and playing more minutes than anyone except Matty Taylor.

The 25-year-old said: “It’s wonderful to receive both trophies and really humbling to know that the hard work you put in all year is recognised by the fans and by the players who you work with on the training pitches and then play matches with.

“I’d like to thank everyone who voted, and these awards mean so much to me.”

The goal of the season prize was renamed tonight in memory of U’s legend Beauchamp, who died aged 50 in February, and his family were special guests.

Around 300 people attended the ceremony at the Kassam Stadium, including U’s players and staff.

James Golding received the young player of the year award after a promising season.

In the last six months the 17-year-old centre back has made his U’s debut, signed his first professional contract with the club and helped Banbury United win Pitching In Southern League Premier Central during his loan spell.

Beth Lumsden was named women’s supporters’ player of the year, with head of physical performance Chris Neville accepting the award on her behalf.

The forward, who is her side’s top-scorer, could not attend the ceremony as she was travelling back from United Women’s 1-0 win at Ipswich Town this afternoon.

Matty Taylor received the Golden Boot for the third year running, having achieved multiple milestones in recent months.

The striker reached 50 goals for the club in all competitions, 50 in the Football League and hit 20 goals in a season for the first time in a yellow shirt.

Taylor has scored 22 times in 2021/22, eight ahead of Brannagan with one game of the season remaining.

Long-serving secretary Mick Brown was named Micky Lewis Club Person of the Year, the second award renamed this evening.

Lewis, who died last March aged 56, played 351 games and was twice caretaker boss during a 27-year association with the U’s. His wife Suzanne was another special guest at the ceremony.

Meanwhile, head coach Karl Robinson was named community person of the year for his work away from the first-team.

Among other things, the United boss recently became an ambassador for Oxford-based hospice Helen & Douglas House and earlier this month ran the London Landmarks Half Marathon for prostate cancer charity Prost8.

“I wasn’t expecting that award and will be searching for the people who kept that a surprise from me,” he said.

“But it’s on behalf of the whole club really. We all work so hard and everyone who wears the badge knows what it means to so many people around the city and the whole of Oxfordshire.”
