KARL Robinson says Mark Sykes will benefit from being with the Republic of Ireland despite a lack of game-time.

The Oxford United midfielder was an unused substitute for the friendlies against Belgium and Lithuania after receiving his first call-up to the senior squad.

Meanwhile, Gavin Whyte scored his fourth Northern Ireland goal in last Friday’s win in Luxembourg, before starting Tuesday’s defeat to Hungary alongside U’s teammate Ciaron Brown.

January signing Oisin Smyth played the first 45 minutes in Northern Ireland Under 21s’ loss to France on Monday.

United’s international cohort returned to the training ground this morning as they prepare for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One trip to Plymouth Argyle.

Robinson kept a close eye on the group while they were away and was looking forward to catching up with the players.

United’s head coach said: “It was great for Sykesy to experience playing with different players.

"That will really test him mentally, physically and technically.

“I spoke to him last week as well as (Republic of Ireland assistant manager) Keith Andrews, who’s a good friend of mine, to ask how he was getting on.

“I didn’t want to phone too much, it was important I kept my distance but also that I had some sort of connection.

“I’m really proud of him, but just as proud of Ciaron and of Gavin for scoring a goal. It was really pleasing for us.”
