GAVIN Whyte impressed for Northern Ireland as a second half substitute, scoring a late goal to wrap up a friendly win away to Luxembourg.

Whyte scored his fourth goal for his country on what was his 23rd appearance.

Both Whyte and Oxford United teammate Ciaron Brown were part of a quadruple sub just after the hour mark, with the scores level at 1-1.

It took Whyte a little over 20 minutes to score Northern Ireland’s third and seal the victory.

In the 85th minute, he chased a long ball from goalkeeper Luke Southwood, forced a defender into a mistake and placed a composed finish into the corner when one on one with the goalkeeper.

Josh Magennis had put Ian Baraclough’s side in front early on, only for Marvin Martins to equalise for the hosts with a header in the 58th minute.

Whyte and Brown were sent on five minutes later, coming on for Blackpool striker Shayne Lavery and captain Jonny Evans respectively.

Whyte was involved in the second goal, spinning nicely inside the penalty box and laying to off Niall McGinn, who crossed for Steven Davis to prod home with 83 minutes on the clock.

Both Whyte and Brown will be hoping to get more minutes for their country when they host Hungary in a friendly on Tuesday.

Oisin Smyth was an unused substitute as Northern Ireland under-21s lost against Slovakia.
