AUNT Sally is set to make a league return after two years of Covid-related absence.

The Abingdon & District Aunt Sally Association confirmed its plans for a full season at its annual general meeting, with proposals to return in May.

A statement from the association read: “Covid restrictions have prevented any league action for the past two years and although some teams managed to continue by playing friendlies, the effect on the ‘heartland’ of Aunt Sally, our pubs and clubs have suffered, many dreadfully, as a consequence of both lockdowns and other rightly imposed Covid restrictions.

“There have been many changes over the past two years affecting the hospitality industry and that will, we are sure, affect the numbers of teams taking part in the forthcoming season, but we are still hoping to attract as many teams and players as possible.

“We know some pubs have closed, some have redesignated their gardens and dispensed with their Aunt Sally pitches, but after 62 years since our formation we are committed to carry on and to attract as many teams and players to our sport.

“We are very keen to attract younger players, it is something that youngsters can enjoy, and after a few throws are often better than some of those who have been playing many years.

“And also ladies, over the past few years we have seen many more ladies take up the sport and that’s great.”
