A PLANNED fanzone at Oxford United’s game against Burton Albion last Saturday was cancelled over the fee charged by Kassam Stadium landlords Firoka.

Minutes from last Wednesday’s meeting of the Oxford United Supporters’ Panel show the project was scrapped because it was ‘financially prohibitive’.

The club had planned to hold three more fanzones at subsequent home games.

Firoka is owned by former U’s chairman Firoz Kassam, who sold the club in 2006 but retained ownership of the stadium.

The meeting minutes say an agreement was in place to use part of the stadium car park, with the club told to expect a ‘similar fee’ to those charged to car boot sales at the site.

But United were notified early last week that the charge would be ‘significantly higher’ for the four fanzones, according to the minutes, with all of them paid before the Burton match.

The minutes record that the supporters’ panel and the club were ‘deeply frustrated’ that the initiative was cancelled.

The panel had hoped to hold a meet and greet with the women’s team at the fanzone, on the day they launched their partnership with the Her Game Too campaign.

Children’s activities, games and refreshments were also booked.

The club declined to comment and Firoka has been approached for a response.
