GAVIN Whyte felt his first goal of the season was worth the wait as he helped Oxford United to a crushing win over Burton Albion.

The U’s scored four before half-time at the Kassam Stadium, with the Northern Ireland international making it 2-0 with a piercing drive into the top corner from 20 yards.

The 4-1 win means United fans have seen 26 goals in the last five matches at Grenoble Road, helping Sky Bet League One’s most prolific team rise to fourth in the table.

The verdict: Oxford United's entertainers continue to get fans off their seats

It was a good day all-round for Whyte, who got off the mark in the 30th game of his second U’s spell.

The Cardiff City loanee said: “Scoring goals wasn’t really in my mind, I just want to keep doing well for the team. Getting assists helps as well.

“I knew it would come sooner rather than later and I’m buzzing I got the goal.

“It was a good strike, it bounced up nicely for me and I caught it clean.

“It was definitely worth waiting for.”

Whyte’s 35th-minute strike was followed by two more in the closing stages of the half, with the 26-year-old setting up Matty Taylor to fire home a spectacular volley for United’s fourth.

It was his tenth assist of the season, leaving him second only to Accrington Stanley’s Sean McConville in League One.

Whyte said: “I don’t really look too much into it, if I don’t score I love getting assists.

“At the end of the day I love playing well for this team and as long as we get the three points I don’t really care who scores.”

Adlene Guedioura scored Burton’s consolation in first-half stoppage-time, but it barely took the shine off an irresistable 45 minutes from the hosts.

Sam Baldock’s header got them up and running in the seventh minute and the striker swept home his second during the flurry of goals later on.

The three scorers linked impressively in a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Whyte just behind the experienced duo.

United have only recently switched to that system and the forward feels it suits his and the team’s strengths.

Whyte said: “Playing in the '10' with two strikers ahead of me is good for me.

“They’re good with their runs so when I get on the ball the first thing I do is look for them.

“It was a great win and the boys were brilliant.”
