KARL Robinson revealed he urged Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink not to accept the Burton Albion manager’s job for the second time.

The former Netherlands striker returned to the Pirelli Stadium last January with the Brewers bottom of Sky Bet League One.

Less than 24 hours after he was appointed, Hasselbaink watched from the stands as Burton were thrashed 5-1 by Oxford United in a game that showed the size of the task ahead of him.

The Staffordshire side had won just twice all season, but their new manager led an incredible turnaround that saw them gain 44 points from their final 24 matches to finish 16th.

Burton have improved on that this time around and go into tomorrow’s trip to the Kassam Stadium 14th in the table, despite a four-game winless run.

Robinson is looking forward to pitting his wits against Hasselbaink again as he warned fourth-placed United will not have it all their own way.

The U’s head coach said: “Jimmy’s a good friend, we’ll definitely have a bust up over the weekend because of the way we both are. You wouldn’t know we actually get on.

“I told him not to take the Burton job and he was probably the best manager in League One (last season).

“What he did was remarkable, I said that to him at the last game of the season.

“I think I voted for him, even though he was only there for 50 per cent of the season.

“From where they were to where they are, we know they’re going to be good. We know they’re going to work hard.”
