BANBURY United bounced back from their Emirates FA Cup defeat to Barrow by beating Rushall Olympic 1-0.

Chris Wreh scored the only goal of the game after 10 minutes, with the result lifting the Puritans up to third, four points above Rushall in fourth.

Andy Whing made two changes from the side that lost to Barrow, with Jay Williams and Henry Landers coming in for Tom Sharpe and Jack Stevens.

The cup defeat saw a club record 19-game unbeaten run come to an end, surpassing a 13-match run set in 1961 by Banbury Spencer.

However, Banbury got off to the perfect start against Rushall when a clearance from goalkeeper Tom Palmer deflected off Morgan Roberts into the path of Wreh, who scored with his left foot, smashing the ball low and hard into the net.

Landers and Roberts then had attempts on goal in the opening stages of the game as Banbury piled the pressure on.

As the first half went on, Rushall grew into the game with Owen Parry going close following good work in the build-up from Richard Batchelor.

Before the break, Tom Thorley stung the palms of Ben Taylor, with Parry also going close again.

Just three minutes after half time, Banbury had a great chance to double their lead.

Ben Acquaye went through on goal but rolled a shot wide of the post, while after the hour mark, Landers scuffed a shot which the Rushall defence was able to clear.

With 73 minutes on the clock, Kelvin Langmead forced a save from Palmer in the Rushall goal.

Tyrone Ofori and Parry went close near the end for the visitors, however Banbury held firm to claim all three points.

Wantage Town beat Cirencester Town 2-1 in the second round of the CSS League Challenge Cup.

Both sides took the opportunity to rest players with 19-year-old Tony Longongo and Tyriq Hunte making their Wantage debuts.

Longongo capitalised on some indecision in the home defence to put Wantage ahead on 22 minutes.

The hosts pulled level on 39 minutes when Ross Gabriel finished from close range.

Cirencester then had a chance which bounced down from the crossbar and out, with the officials adamant it didn’t cross the line.

Kacper Kowalczyk made a couple of saves to keep the score at 1-1 with Cirencester starting the second half strongly.

Wantage looked to exploit on the counter attack, and just as the tie looked set to be going to penalties, Wantage nicked a winner.

Shaquille Ishmael broke down the left and squeezed the ball inside the near post in the 90th minute, his second goal in two games.
