CHINNOR have announced the signing of a former Premiership hooker.

Mike van Vuuren, who has previously played for the likes of Leicester Tigers, Bath and Northampton Saints, is also a former South Africa under-20 international.

He will strengthen the National League 1 side’s options at hooker, joining Alex Cornish, Charlie Fleckney and Cameron Terry in competing for the number two jersey.

van Vuuren praised the ambition at Chinnor having signed for the club.

He said: “I’ve had a few conversations with Richard [Thorpe, director of rugby] and the club is certainly building an ambitious culture.

“It’s great to feel like someone backs your ability and believes in what you can deliver on the field and I look forward to playing a role in the growth of this team.”

Thorpe said 30-year-old van Vuuren’s experience would have a positive effect on the club.

He said: “We are delighted to have brought Mike van Vuuren into the senior squad with immediate effect.

“He brings with him Premiership experience, which will no doubt have a positive impact on the whole squad.

“Mike is a tough, combative player with a strong set piece.

“I am looking forward to seeing him in action for the black and white.”

van Vuuren started his senior career with Free State Cheetahs in South Africa, featuring in the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup.

He then moved to French Top 14 side Stade Francais in 2012, before returning home two years later to play for Eastern Province Kings.

He has now been playing in England for six years and was most recently a part of Ealing Trailfinders’ Greene King IPA Championship squad for the 2020/21 campaign.

van Vuuren also played a part in London Irish’s promotion from the Championship during the 2018/19 season, while he enjoyed a loan spell with the Middlesex side.
