OXFORD United will find their ruthless streak if they keep playing like they did against Gillingham, says Herbie Kane.

The midfielder set up Matty Taylor’s fifth-minute opener at the Kassam Stadium, but the U’s were pegged back by Alex MacDonald’s goal against his former club.

United controlled most of the Sky Bet League One clash, enjoying 73 per cent of possession and taking 25 shots to the visitors’ seven, but had to settle for a draw.

The verdict: Gillingham draw added to frustrating month for Oxford United

It was not the first time the U’s have lacked a finishing touch this season, but Kane is confident the goals will come.

“We get in the right positions, we just need that final bit of quality that will get us a goal,” the 22-year-old said.

“The lads are frustrated, but we thought we controlled the game throughout.

“It was just that final pass we couldn’t get right, but we take the point and recover for Tuesday (against Accrington Stanley).

“We need to concentrate, keep doing what we’re good at and if we put teams under pressure one will go in.

“We didn’t quite get that, but hopefully in the future we’ll start putting the chances away.”

One positive was the service provided to Taylor, who saw much more of the ball than in recent weeks.

The striker scored his first goal since August 21 and Kane revealed a change in approach reaped rewards.

The Barnsley loanee said: “Throughout the week we’ve been trying to get him to stay in the centre, so it’s good our work has paid off.

“We need to trust that the ball’s going to come and Matty’s going to finish, because that’s what he does.

“If we keep doing it, the more he’s going to score.”

Kane’s excellent through ball for the goal was the highlight of a classy display in one of the two advanced central midfield roles.

He said: “I like playing a bit higher up the pitch, just so I can be involved in goals and assisting.

“I’m happy to do both jobs and wherever the gaffer wants to play me I’ll do my best.”
