KARL Robinson admitted Oxford United should have beaten Gillingham comfortably as their winless September continued.

The U’s dominated possession and peppered the visitors’ goal with shots, but could not retake the lead after Alex MacDonald equalised against his former club on the half-hour mark.

Robinson felt United improved on last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Cheltenham Town and they were in control from Matty Taylor’s fifth-minute opener onwards.

But the U’s head coach was once again frustrated by a lack of killer instinct, with his side now on a four-match winless run in Sky Bet League One.

“This game should’ve been 100 per cent out of sight and we’ve got to find a way to kill teams off when we’re so dominant,” said Robinson.

“If I had a critique of the team right now, it’s that when that first goal goes in, go and get the second and third.

“It happened at Bolton, Wimbledon, Cambridge, here today, where we’ve gone 1-0 up and not got the result that our play deserved.

“Take your chances, be more ruthless in the final third, make sure your decision-making is better.

“People are slashing at things rather than having that calmness in front of goal.

“I’ve got tremendous faith it’ll come if they keep doing the right things.”

United created far more chances than they did against Cheltenham, without being clinical enough in the final third.

They dominated midfield and Robinson was thrilled with Herbie Kane’s performance, as the Barnsley loanee starred on his home debut.

“I’m so impressed with Herbie Kane, he was sensational today,” he said.

“He sees passes forwards quickly and we got crosses in the box, we asked questions of the goalkeeper.

“We just weren’t ruthless enough to score two, three or four and that’s what it should’ve been.”
