EDDIE Pepperell is one shot off the lead at the DS Automobiles Italian Open after an excellent opening round.

The Frilford Heath member carded a six-under par 65 at Marco Simone GC, Rome, to move to an early share of fourth.

Starting from the tenth, the Abingdon golfer sunk three successive birdies and picked up another shot at the 15th.

Pepperell was not quite so flawless after the turn, but remained near the top of the leaderboard.

A birdie at the second was followed by a bogey at the third, before he picked up two further shots at the next two holes.

He added his eighth birdie of the day at the eighth hole, before ending with a bogey at the ninth.

Pepperell begins his second round at 2pm tomorrow.
