NATHAN Holland has already given Oxford United fans one memorable moment this week – and now he wants to repeat the trick.

The winger scored within 15 minutes of coming off the bench at Burton Albion on Wednesday to send the travelling support into a frenzy at what they thought was the winning goal.

It was an emphatic way to announce his return to the U’s on loan from West Ham United, having been unavailable for last weekend’s Sky Bet League One opener at Cambridge United after being told to self-isolate.

Holland missed the bulk of 2020 through injury after his first spell at United was cut short, so it was a special moment for the 23-year-old.

But attention now turns to today’s visit of Charlton Athletic in League One, where full crowds return to the Kassam Stadium for the first time since February 2020.

Holland said: “To get a goal on your second debut is a great feeling.

“I’ve been working on getting in the box more, so it’s good to get a reward for that.

“I’ve had my injuries so to be able to get back on the pitch and reward those fans with a goal was really special.

“To have them all back and cheer us on gives us that edge.”

He added: “To play at home again is something that we’ve all been waiting for, I’m sure the fans have been too.

“Everybody’s excited about it around the club, but we’ve also got a job to do and we’re ready for that.”

Holland’s season-long loan was announced on July 29 and he played in a pre-season friendly at Bristol Rovers two days later, but was told to isolate by NHS track and trace that weekend.

He had not trained with the squad before the Carabao Cup first round tie at Burton as a result, but the forward refused to let it affect him.

He said: “When it comes down to it, it’s annoying but you just have to sit and reflect on it.

“Luckily I was able to do some running and I still feel fit, so I’m ready to go.”

United made eight changes for the trip to Burton and Karl Robinson is expected to revert to a similar line-up to the one that started at Cambridge.

Defenders Elliott Moore (chest infection) and Sam Long (calf) remained doubts heading into the weekend.
