In a bid to safeguard current owners, new grading times will be in operation to ensure their charges have sufficient runs with the grading strength at Cowley at such a high level.

That, and the fact that January and February always sees an influx of new youngsters is why the racing office had to act.

The grading strength stands at around 450 and this despite no trials being held for the last two weeks.

Now, puppies will need to clock 28.20 to get graded, while hounds that are two years and older will have to register 28.10. Hopefuls over the six bend 595 metre mark will have to post around 38.50.

As a gesture to ease the problem for some trainers, the racing office is allowing each trainer to trial one hound before racing on Tuesdays.

  • IN a bid to attract more punters in January the Stadium are offering free entry, a race card and a three-course meal for £7 on Tuesdays.

It will cost £8.50 on Thursday and £11 on Saturday. The offer is valid until January 13.
