OXFORD United will begin the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One season with a trip to newly-promoted Cambridge United.

The U's visit the Abbey Stadium on Saturday, August 7, as they start with an away game for the fifth straight campaign.

Head coach Karl Robinson will watch from the stands - unless United's Carabao Cup first round tie is moved forward - as he completes a four-match touchline ban for the incidents that overshadowed April's 3-1 defeat at Sunderland.

The U's face Charlton Athletic in their first home league match one week later, with the club 'optimistic' they will be allowed to welcome fans.

United supporters watched just four games at the Kassam Stadium last season due to coronavirus restrictions.

Robinson's side are scheduled to face Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, September 11, in what will be the sides' first meeting since the 2019/20 League One play-off final.

But that comes with a caveat, with the English Football League announcing late last night they have created an 'interchangeable fixture list' for Derby County and Wycombe due to an ongoing disciplinary process against the Rams.

Gareth Ainsworth's side were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season after finishing one place below Derby, who have been ordered to resubmit three years of accounts over a financial fair play investigation.

Elsewhere, United face their first league trip to Sheffield Wednesday since April 1991 on Saturday, October 2.

One week later they travel to Sunderland, where last season's game was marred by controversy.

The U's do not have much travelling over Christmas and face Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Boxing Day.

That is followed by home games against AFC Wimbledon and last season's League Two winners Cheltenham Town over New Year.

The campaign ends on the weekend of April 30, when United host Doncaster Rovers.
