OXFORD United must better Portsmouth’s result today to stand a chance of reaching the Sky Bet League One play-offs.

But there is one scenario that could see them win and finish above the south coast side, only to miss out on a place in the top six.

The U’s will finish above Pompey if they triumph over Burton Albion and Accrington Stanley get a point at Fratton Park.

But those results could still see them pipped to sixth place if Charlton Athletic overcome champions Hull City by four goals more than United beat the Brewers.

Karl Robinson: Oxford United must take care of their own result before worrying about rivals

For example, if the U’s triumphed 1-0 over Burton and the Addicks ran out 5-0 winners at The Valley, both sides would be level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

EFL regulations state that in this scenario ‘the highest placed club shall be determined by the respective league records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored’.

This would see Charlton clinch the final play-off spot, having taken four points off United this season – winning 2-0 at The Valley in October, before a 0-0 draw at the Kassam Stadium in March.

You would not expect it to come to this, with Hull top by five points and unbeaten since February 23.
