OXFORD United have triggered one-year contract extensions for Mark Sykes and Alex Gorrin.

The midfielders’ deals were set to run out this summer, but the U’s took up the option to keep them at the club for another 12 months.

Gorrin arrived from Scottish outfit Motherwell in June 2019, five months after Sykes joined from Northern Irish Premier Division side Glenavon.

The latter reckons he is enjoying the best form of his two-and-a-half years at United and hopes his stay is not limited to one more season.

Sykes, 23, said: “The quicker it was sorted, the better.

“I’m glad that’s it for the next year and hopefully if I keep performing something else will come up.

“I feel since the Lincoln game (on March 26) I’ve been playing really well.

“I’ve had a few good and bad performances throughout the season, but I feel this is my best period.

“I’m really happy with how I’m getting on and results have been good, which helps.”

Sykes has had a mixed campaign, falling out of favour after United’s derby defeat to Swindon Town in November, but he has been an ever-present since February.

Despite not scoring in 38 games this season, he claimed his second assist in four matches against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday as the U's maintained their Sky Bet League One play-off bid.

A thigh injury has limited Gorrin’s involvement in recent weeks, but the Spaniard has still made 37 appearances in 2020/21.

The 27-year-old scored his only U’s goal at Portsmouth last November.

“I’m very excited, it has been a really enjoyable two years full of ups and downs, like football always is,” Gorrin said.

“Over the last two years everyone has made sacrifices.

“We’ve had some really good moments and hopefully there are still a lot to come this season.”

Josh Ruffels, Anthony Forde and Rob Hall are among the players whose contracts are set to expire this summer, while James Henry is another with an option of an extra year.
