A SCINTILLATING front nine gave Eddie Pepperell a platform to push on at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open.

The Abingdon golfer picked up four shots before the turn to rocket up the leaderboard, eventually carding an opening round of five-under.

It left the 30-year-old tied for eighth when he entered the clubhouse.

Starting from the tenth, the Frilford Heath member birdied his first hole, before picking up shots at the 13th, 14th and 18th.

Reaching the turn four-under, Pepperell negotiated the back nine flawlessly.

A birdie at the par-three fifth was sandwiched by four pars either side as he gave himself a great chance of making the weekend.

Pepperell tees off alongside Spanish pair Alvaro Quiros and Eduard Rousaud at 2.20pm GMT tomorrow.
