Lewis Calcutt made a magnificent century break as Witney A routed Cowley Conservative Club A in round one of the Simonds Cup, writes DAVID WHITE.

Calcutt compiled his 102 in the final frame of Witney's 5-1 victory, eclipsing a 60-break made by teammate Justin Buckingham in the opener.

Malcolm Grieveson won Cowley's only frame, beating Ben Calcutt in the fifth.

House Club B, from Division 2, upset the odds with a comprehensive 5-1 win against Division 1's Thame A.

Paul Evans gave Thame the lead, beating Keith Philpott in the opening frame, but from then on House Club took control.

Paul Larkins saw off Warren Garcia to level the match before Mike Augar got the better of Toby Todd.

Philpott beat Evans in the fourth frame, while Larkins and Augar repeated their wins in frames five and six.

Oracle A defeated Eynsham A 4-0, with Matty Bramall beating Lawrence Parsons in frames one and four and Kev Higgs and Dave Noake claiming a frame each.

Riley A got the better of Abingdon Conservative Club A 4-2.

There were no shocks in the Sherlock Cup, where Headington Royal British Legion A cruised past Cowley Con B 4-0.

Fran Mapplethorpe pipped Cowley's Jim Smart Jnr 43-37 in the first frame, while Elaine Cox beat Jim Smart Snr in frame two.

Tony Swatton defeated Mark Bayliss and Mapplethorpe beat Smart Jnr for a second time, while the remaining two frames were not contested.

Thame C booked their passage in round two with a comfortable 4-2 win against Littlemore RBL B.

Mark Barrow and Phil Baker secured two points each for Thame, while Littlemore's came from Lee Haggerty, who got the better of Derek Syrett.

Elsewhere, New Club B beat East Oxford Con A 4-0, Morris Motors B defeated House Club A 4-1 and Westcott A saw off Yarnton RBL A 4-2.

Witney E went through by default after Headington RBL B failed to turn up for the match.

The second round in both competitions will take place on Monday, January 14.

  • Due to ongoing delays at the new Lord Nuffield Club, Morris Motors are still having to play their home matches from alternative locations.

The B and C teams will play their home games at Rileys Club, Cowley, until further notice.
