A TRIP to Crewe Alexandra will conjure up memories of a memorable day 25 years ago for many Oxford United fans.
The U's travelled to Gresty Road for the penultimate game of the 1995/96 season, when they were just two points off the Division Two automatic promotion places.
Oxford Mail sports reporter James Roberts looks back at the build-up to a tense afternoon for United and what it meant for their season.
The U's had started the campaign poorly, but ten wins in their previous 14 games had catapulted them into promotion contention.
They started the day third, just two points behind second-placed Blackpool, who were in action against Walsall.
Crewe - who were in the play-off places themselves - did not make the game all-ticket, so thousands of United fans arrived early to get a seat and the away end was full 90 minutes before kick-off.
They were rewarded for their commitment, with Paul Moody and Joey Beauchamp scoring in a 2-1 win.
Blackpool's defeat to Walsall by the same scoreline put the U's in the driving seat ahead of the final day of the season.
