OXFORD United are set to welcome Luke McNally to full training for the first time today.

The 21-year-old signed from League of Ireland Premier Division side St Patrick’s Athletic in January, but had not played since November.

The young centre back underwent a mini pre-season to get up to speed and has already impressed Karl Robinson.

United’s head coach said: “He’s in the top five per cent of the fastest players at the club.

“He’s the fastest centre back I’ve had and certainly has the physical capabilities we knew he had.

“He comes to all the games and I think this integration period has been really exciting for him.

“He has learnt an awful lot.”

With John Mousinho a long-term absentee following his knee operation in January, United only have Joe Grayson as recognised centre-back cover.

But McNally may have to wait until next season to make his debut.

Asked if the youngster could be involved before the end of the campaign, Robinson said: “Ideally, no.

“Rob (Atkinson) and Elliott (Moore) are doing wonderfully well, so we’ll see.”
