OXFORD United Women's league season has been curtailed with immediate effect.

The FA announced this afternoon that the campaigns for tiers three to six of the pyramid would end and be declared incomplete, with no promotion or relegation.

United Women were second in National League Southern Premier, the highest level affected by the decision, but had not played since fixtures were halted in December.

They are still in the second round of the FA Cup and travel to Cardiff City on April 4.

The announcement came after the FA Women's Football Board asked for feedback from leagues and clubs.

After taking these views into account, the FA said in a statement that extending the season beyond the end of May 'would not be a viable option due to the operational issues faced by many clubs and leagues'.

Instead of promotion and relegation, the Women's Football Board recommended a 'process of upward club movement' should take place.

The statement continued: "Further feedback on this will be sought from clubs at tier three to six before details of the process are confirmed, but it is hoped that facilitating club movement will support the stability and integrity of the women’s football pyramid following the disruption to the last two seasons.

"This is likely to result in expanded divisions at tiers three to six for the 2021/22 season, something which leagues have indicated they could accommodate."

All decisions are subject to FA Council approval.
