MICKY Lewis left a legacy at Oxford United.

That is the view of Karl Robinson - and, in all probability, many more people - as he paid tribute to the U's legend, who died yesterday aged 56.

Lewis played 351 times and was twice caretaker boss during his 27-year association with United, but he fulfilled just about every other role at the club.

There will be a minute's applause before today's Sky Bet League One game against Charlton Athletic, while the flags at the Kassam Stadium are at half mast.

And Robinson had some poignant words to say about the U's stalwart.

The United head coach said: “I’ve never seen the club rock so much.

"Because of the shock of the age – it’s far too young for anyone to go.

"It’s quite remarkable how many people who are still here he’s affected.

"I spoke to (former United boss) Chrissy Wilder about the type of person he was and the love and affection he had for him."

Lewis leaves behind his wife Suzanne and son, Zach.

Robinson said: “It’s a sad day for everyone, but the most important people are his family and his young child.

"We hope he’ll grow to understand the legacy his father’s left and I think we all have a responsibility to do that.

“The big thing for me is that once again you’ve seen the Oxford United family pull together as a community to pay their respects.

"This football club has to mean something, we have to get it to a point that it’s a pivotal point in every community.

"This is why people the likes of Micky were such a big personality within the football community of Oxfordshire.

"We’d all like to pay our respects to him and our heartfelt wishes to his wife and their child.

"As a football club we’ll stand by them.”
