OXFORD United's last visit to Ipswich Town came almost exactly a year ago.

The U's travelled to Portman Road for the first time since 1999 in a game that, like this year, pitted two Sky Bet League One play-off candidates against each other.

Oxford Mail sports reporter James Roberts looks back at the sides' fortunes going into the game, how the 90 minutes panned out and what it meant for United's season.

The U's began the afternoon tenth in the table and five points off the play-offs, fresh from a 5-0 thumping of AFC Wimbledon in midweek.

Ipswich, meanwhile, had won just four of their last 21 matches in all competitions to slip to seventh, having been top of the league in November.

Alex Gorrin returned from a two-match suspension, replacing Mark Sykes, and his defensive nous was needed in a first-half where United were put under the cosh.

But the U's grew into the game and Matty Taylor's 44th-minute goal, which followed an excellent move, proved the difference as they claimed a gritty win.

It put United within three points of the play-offs and continued what would become a five-match winning run - but less than three weeks later the season was halted by the coronavirus pandemic.
