Several Oxford United players have been told their careers are on the line after another big embarrassment for the club on Saturday.

The U's were held 0-0 at home by Tonbridge Angels in the FA Trophy and boss Darren Patterson branded the performance of the midfielders and forwards "a disgrace".

He said: "My back four were OK, but from the midfielders to the forwards they were a disgrace from start to finish.

"I've made them aware of their positions and, as far as I'm concerned, there's a lot of players who have three weeks to save their Oxford United careers."

Tonbridge, fourth from bottom in the Ryman Premier Division, earned a replay at their little Longmead Stadium tomorrow night, and they might even have snatched victory, with substitute Hamid Barr hitting a post 14 minutes from time.

The Oxford players are among the best paid in the Conference, but they looked no more capable than the Angels, who are semi-pro with most of them picking up £150-£200 a week.

Patterson said he thought some in the United camp who didn't do the business should donate their wages to charity.

"This club is not only set up League-wise, there's League's wages going out of this football club," he said.

"If I was one of the midfielders or front players - Danny Rose apart - I would be embarrassed to take my money this week.

"I would be donating it to some form of charity. I'm not going to name any individuals, as a collective group it simply wasn't good enough."

Patterson was particularly upset with United's first-half performance again.

Yet he said they could not have been better prepared.

"Preparation-wise from my staff is first class," he added. "It's second to none, up to Championship level, I would say. Perhaps it's too good for these players, perhaps it's too easy.

"But I can assure everyone that the way we prepared for this game was the exact same way we prepared for Southend. Training's done with a tempo, everything's done properly.

"We prepared perfectly for it, but yet again I've been let down. We didn't look up for it, which is unbelievable. But it's something we will put right, it's as simple as that.

"We talk about the players we want, it's the player's attitude that has to be right - every single day. We've not got enough winners in there.

"Winners are consistent every day, winners want to do better every day, winners want to improve and give it all every day. And unfortunately, there's not enough of them in my dressing room at this moment in time.

"No-one took them lightly, but everyone's seen the performance once they crossed that white line, especially the first half."

The players may have been hoping for a day off yesterday, but that was cancelled by the angry U's boss, who called them in for extra training.

Goalkeeper Billy Turley (pictured) misses tomorrow's replay because of suspension, but is now available for Saturday's Setanta Shield trip to Aldershot.

United have to decide whether to play teenager Sam Warrell between the sticks or look elsewhere for an experienced keeper.
