OXFORD United's Papa John's Trophy victory over AFC Wimbledon had Karl Robinson relishing the options available to him in the weeks ahead.

The U's triumphed 3-1 in the quarter-final, with Sam Winnall scoring twice in the opening 29 minutes - his first goals for the club - and Mide Shodipo adding his ninth of the season after the break.

It came 24 hours after United signed Elliot Lee and Brandon Barker on transfer deadline day, bolstering Robinson's attacking options.

Winnall has had to build up fitness after an injury-hit three years, but his manager thought the striker showed signs of his old self.

Robinson said: “He’s an all-round, very good striker.

"The second one is a better finish than you actually think – it’s behind him and he has to lift it above the defender.

"We see it every day in training, he’s an unbelievable finisher."

Robinson replaced Alex Gorrin with another deadline day signing, Joe Grayson, at half-time, after the Spanish midfielder felt some tightness in his groin.

While Lee and Barker were not involved, the U's head coach was able to bring on Cameron Brannagan, Matty Taylor and James Henry with his side 3-0 up.

Robinson added: "I said to Sam at half-time: ‘I know you want to play more than 65 minutes, but I need to keep you and Matty Taylor fit’.

"Imagine that every week – that’s what they’re at the football club to do, and to both score."

While the U's manager is looking forward to calling on a fully-fit Winnall, he is also licking his lips at the players at his disposal on the flanks.

Shodipo had not found the net in senior football before signing for United in October, but is the club's second-highest scorer this season.

Robinson said: "Mide getting nine goals this year is an unbelievable return – it’s a better rate than Marcus (Browne) and Gavin (Whyte).

"Then you’ve got to add Elliot Lee and Brandon to that.

“Sometimes in football you fall on little gems that you weren’t expecting.

"Imagine Mide and Brandon rotating."

Robinson was also delighted with the display of Mark Sykes, who was involved in United's second and third goals.

He said: “I thought Mark Sykes was probably the best player on the pitch.

"I thought he was going to be and he certainly showed that.”
