OXFORD United’s form means tonight’s visit of Cambridge United cannot come soon enough, says Elliott Moore.

The U’s play their first game for ten days as they host a side who sit third in Sky Bet League Two in the Papa John’s Trophy third round.

Karl Robinson’s men will look to pick up where they left off against Burton Albion on January 2, when a 5-1 victory extended their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions.

United’s head coach revealed last week he was hoping to start Moore alongside Sam Long at centre back, despite the pair topping the charts for the most league minutes in the squad this season.

But even with a trip to Northampton Town coming on Saturday, the centre back will have no complaints if he is picked tonight.

Moore said: “I just want to play every game, especially with the form we’re in.

“No-one wants a rest day, so I’ll definitely take the opportunity to play and try to put in the best performance I can.”

Robinson is expected to make changes to the line-up that started at Burton in a competition that is lower on United’s list of priorities.

Moore has not made an appearance in the Trophy this season, but has played every minute in League One and has captained the U’s since early December.

With players looking to force their way into Robinson’s thinking and a place in the quarter-finals on the line, Moore insists the U’s will not be taking the game lightly.

The 23-year-old said: “I see this game as like every other.

“Whoever plays is not going to just use this game for a bit of fitness or to tick it off.

“It’s one we want to win, as we want to progress as far as we can.

“It’s a great opportunity for the lads who haven’t been playing to fight for their shirt for Saturday.”

Karl Robinson: new centre back is of utmost importance for Oxford United

Tonight ends the U’s second long break between matches in the space of four weeks, after they went 11 days without a game before Boxing Day.

United have played just three times since beating Northampton Town on December 15, after a hectic first three months of the season.

Although the U’s have trained most days during that time, Moore reveals a change of routine has boosted him psychologically.

“I definitely feel refreshed,” he said.

“It’s not really been a physical break because we’ve been training, but it’s more mentally that we haven’t had a game every Tuesday and Saturday.

“We’re back into that routine and I’m looking forward to it.”
