Oxford United boss Darren Patterson said the lesson Southend United gave his team in the FA Cup on Tuesday night is one they hope to learn from.

The Coca-Cola League One side won the second-round replay at Roots Hall 3-0, but the final scoreline could easily have been double that.

"They were very good with their movement and passing, they're a good side," Patterson said. "That is what we have to aspire to.

"It just shows what a good result it was from us when we drew with them at our place."

Billy Turley saved a penalty and made at least five other terrific stops to prevent a cricket score as the gulf between the two teams was clear for all to see.

The U's boss was not despondent though.

He said: "Don't forget they're 60 places above us. Both their centre halfs cost £200,000 and that's the same right through their team.

"I thought the effort was there, we tried, we ran our socks off.

"We changed the shape in the second half to try to get us involved and help us in midfield.

"We had a chance when we were 2-0 down, an open goal, and that might have changed it. But it was a fair result in the end. They were three goals better than us, let's put our hands up.

"I was a little bit disappointed because all their goals were a little bit of our making, and the chances they did make with their quality, they missed them.

"We had two good chances, one when Yemi (Odubade) hit the bar, and one when their goalkeeper made a great save and we didn't follow it in. We could have got one of those, but it wasn't to be.

"Our players kept going to the end and we're a little bit disappointed because our fans were absolutely magnificent. They're different class . . . they were absolutely outstanding tonight.

"They're among the best support, not just in our league, but in the country, and we're just disappointed we couldn't nick a goal for them."
