KARL Robinson is not getting carried away by Oxford United’s good form – especially in this most unpredictable of seasons.

The U’s visit Plymouth Argyle tonight aiming to stretch their unbeaten run to seven games, after the Boxing Day victory at AFC Wimbledon helped them continue to climb up the Sky Bet League One relegation zone.

The 2-0 victory, coming after the success over Northampton Town a fortnight ago, was the first time this season United have claimed back-to-back triumphs.

While those results have boosted Robinson’s side, the foundations were laid with a trio of useful draws against some of the division’s top teams earlier this month.

The U’s held Ipswich Town and then-leaders Hull City at the Kassam Stadium, before a stalemate at in-form Blackpool.

United’s recent upturn in form has pleased Robinson, but the head coach pointed to tonight’s hosts as a case study of how quickly that can change.

Plymouth had lost their previous six League One matches before they beat MK Dons on December 19 and followed it up by twice leading at promotion candidates Charlton Athletic on Saturday, only to draw 2-2.

Robinson said: “They’re coming off the back of four points in two games, we’re coming off the back of six points.

“It’s important to us that we backed those draws up.

“Those are really important victories, but this season’s going to have a lot more twists and turns.

“None of us are thinking we’ve cracked it, we know we’ve got a lot more work to do.”

Plymouth is still in tier 2 of coronavirus restrictions, meaning United will tonight play in front of opposition fans for the first time since March.

The 2,000-strong crowd adds an extra dimension to a tricky test for the U’s, with Argyle boasting the fourth-best home record in the division.

But United will fancy their chances at both ends of the pitch after keeping four clean sheets in their last five League One games.

Jack Stevens: I need performances like this to keep Oxford United No 1 shirt

That run has coincided with Jack Stevens replacing Simon Eastwood in goal and the 23-year-old revealed there is plenty of confidence within the squad.

“It’ll be a tough one,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to it as we’re in a bit of good form.

“We feel like we can go there, match them and hopefully bring home the clean sheet.”
