OXFORD United Women have postponed today's trip to Plymouth Argyle in the wake of yesterday's government announcement.

The U's would have gone top with a victory, but both clubs agreed to call off the game after Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed new tier 4 restrictions for London and much of the south east.

United's next scheduled fixture is not until January 24, when they travel to Chichester & Selsey.

Oxfordshire remained in tier 2 following the announcement, which was followed by a statement from the FA clarifying that football down to the sixth tier will continue across the country.

League One round-up: What yesterday's results mean for Oxford United

This means Oxford United and Vanarama National League South side Oxford City can play on, with the latter next in action on Tuesday when they host Truro City in the Buildbase FA Trophy third round.

Clubs in the four levels below City cannot play or train, but the Pitching In Southern League had already agreed to delay the resumption of the campaign after Thursday's previous update to restrictions.

Six Oxfordshire clubs – Banbury United in Premier Central and Didcot Town, Kidlington, North Leigh, Thame United and Wantage Town in Division 1 Central – are affected.

They last played at the start of November, before competition bosses decided not to recommence games when the second lockdown ended on December 2.

A statement from the league said: "Since the initial survey on December 2, the infection rate has deteriorated in the geographical footprint of our member clubs, which has resulted in a larger number of Southern League clubs being placed in tier 3.

"In reaching this decision, the board considered several factors such as the lack of income from secondary spend revenue, the reduced attendances at tier 3 clubs and more importantly, the duty of care the league has to players, club officials, volunteers and supporters during this current pandemic."

Organisers have not set a formal restart date, but it is 'unlikely' to be before Saturday, January 9 and clubs will receive at least 10 days' notice.

The current government restrictions are due to be next reviewed on Wednesday, December 30.
