EDDIE Pepperell’s early surge proved in vain as he faded away at the DP World Tour Championship.
The Abingdon golfer birdied four of his first five holes at the season-ending event, but fell away to card a second round of one-over par to reach the halfway stage seven-over.
Pepperell had a mountain to climb at six-over at the beginning of day two at Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai.
But a fast start saw the Frilford Heath member race to four-under for the round, raising hopes that he could make the weekend.
The 29-year-old bogeyed the ninth and this was a sign of things to come.
Pepperell dropped another shot at the next hole, before a double-bogey at the 15th.
Another bogey at the 16th left him over-par for the second day in succession.
