MIDE Shodipo is thrilled to have made a good start at Oxford United – but the winger does not want to be known as a super-sub.

Of the U’s three wins in Sky Bet League One this season, the QPR loanee has netted in two of them.

Both have come within moments of him coming off the bench.

While Shodipo admitted it was a relief to finally get his first goals in senior football, the 23-year-old is aiming to prove he can be a threat for 90 minutes.

“I don’t want a super-sub tag, to be honest,” he said.

“I want to be playing week-in, week-out, starting games and scoring.

“It’s a good thing to come on and score obviously, but I don’t want it to be a regular thing that I’m coming off the bench.

“I came here to play games and help the team.

“Getting game time is 100 per cent going to help me.”

Tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Peterborough United could be an ideal chance to play 90 minutes for the first time since April 2018, when Shodipo was on loan at Colchester United.

The spell in Essex contributed to 44 appearances at the start of his professional career without finding the back of the net.

But the wait was finally ended on his U’s debut against Milton Keynes Dons last month.

That surge in belief helped him decide to take on a chance against Rochdale with a first-time shot on Tuesday night, which also ended up beating the goalkeeper.

Shodipo is at a loss to put his finger on what has changed, but it has helped him feel instantly at home.

“I literally don’t know why, but I’ve got a good feeling about this place,” he said.

“I feel like I’m unlocking new doors for myself and this is going to be a big change in my career, starting to score goals and hopefully get some assists as well.

“After the first goal I feel like I could score all the time now.

“It gives me a massive confidence in my ability so I can show what I can do.

“I feel like I needed those goals to gel into the group more and feel a part of it, so they have really helped.”

With the bedding in process well under way, just as when he gets on the ball Shodipo is in no mood to hang around.

He said: “I feel like the new boy phase has gone now. I feel like I’m part of the boys now, so I want to keep it going and really help the team push this season.

“There’s a long way to go.

“Hopefully I’ll score many more goals for this club.”
