HOWEVER Oxford United perform at Gillingham this weekend, do not expect Simon Eastwood to be rushing home to watch the highlights.

While the Football League Show may be a staple Saturday night fixture for many players – and fans – the goalkeeper gets his drama from elsewhere when he puts his feet up.

It is a topic not often discussed by professionals, but not all of them have Sky Sports News on an endless loop at home.

“I’m more of a Broadchurch kind of guy, an ITV drama or something on Channel 4,” Eastwood said.

“I don’t watch too much football.

“I like playing football, but I wouldn’t go home and watch a load. I like to switch off and watch something else.

“Maybe people don’t admit it, but there’s a lot more in the game that are like that.

“It’s probably 70/30 in favour of those who watch.

“You have family time and recharge your batteries, because you know the next day you’ll be watching an hour of analysis on what we’re coming up against.

“There’s a lot of football watching in my life, I just don’t want to watch something like QPR v Coventry.”

That includes the Saturday night highlights from across League One, with which the 31-year-old has a particular complaint on behalf of the goalkeepers’ union.

He said: “On the Quest show you never see many goalkeeping saves.

“When you switch on you just see a goalkeeper looking an idiot, or the goal going in.

“Sometimes I might watch for half an hour it on a Sunday morning, but shows like that are not good for goalkeepers.

“I can’t remember the last save I saw on it.”

On the pitch, Eastwood is looking for his first clean sheet of the campaign tomorrow.

To do so, he may have to keep out a couple of former teammates who have joined the Gillingham ranks this summer.

“It will be a tough game, there are a couple of old Oxford players who I know in Macca (Alex MacDonald) and Jordan Graham,” he said.

“We know both of them well, Jordan is technically very good, as are his set pieces.

“We all remember his free-kick at Blackpool a couple of years ago which got us out of a lot of trouble.

“Macca’s a great guy who works really hard for the team.

“That’s what their team is made of.

“If we’re not ‘at it’ we’ll get turned over.”
