KYRAN Lofthouse and Michael Elechi are hoping to use their first Oxford United starts as a springboard to more opportunities.

The pair occupied the full-back roles as part of an experimental defensive quartet in Tuesday’s EFL Trophy draw with Bristol Rovers, which the U’s won on penalties.

Both players have been training with United’s senior squad this season and Elechi was grateful to head coach Karl Robinson for handing him a debut.

The left back, who turns 19 on Saturday, said: “I got to the stadium and found out I would be starting. That helped as I didn’t have to sleep on it.

“It’s a big boost from someone who has had belief in me.”

Originally from London, Elechi was previously at Manchester United and impressed as the U’s reached the FA Youth Cup fourth round in 2018/19.

Lofthouse, meanwhile, grew up in Oxford and made his debut in the 2-1 Leasing.com Trophy win over Norwich City Under 21s last September.

He then starred on loan at Oxford City in Vanarama National League South, earning a new one-year contract in May.

After a Carabao Cup cameo against Watford last month, the 20-year-old is itching for more chances.

He said: “I’m from Oxford, so it means a lot to me to to play for the club and I know how much it means to everyone around here.

“I’m going to use it as a stepping stone and keep progressing – I feel like I’ve got a lot more to give.”

Rovers pressed high to try to prevent the pair from settling, but Robinson was pleased with their efforts.

He said: “I thought Kyran was put under a bit of pressure early on, but for two young players they coped really well.

“Michael looks a real strong boy and one that can develop.

“It’s a learning curve – they’re very young kids and it’s important we respect that.”
