JORDANNE Whiley’s quest for a second Grand Slam singles crown came unstuck at the first hurdle.
The 28-year-old, who lives in Steventon, was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by top seed Diede De Groot in the last eight of the US Open.
Whiley faced a battle from the start as her serve was broken in the first game of the match.
It got worse as her opponent raced into a 4-0 lead and, although Whiley clawed the set back to 5-3, there was too much to do.
De Groot broke the British player’s serve in the second game of the next set to take full control and Whiley was unable to get back on level terms.
She was due to partner Yui Kamiji in the women’s wheelchair doubles semi-finals last night, with Angelica Bernal and Dana Mathewson the opponents.
